Petland: The truth is out

Petland, a $51 billion cruel industry that houses a variety of animals in unsanitary conditions, is allegedly supplied by animal mills. Claims they don’t sell animals that come from commercial breeding farms, but numerous examples prove the opposite. Petland is not just a place where people buy animals. Many also play briefly with them before putting them back into their cages.

This vile company confines dogs, cats, bird, mice, bunnies, aquatic animals and reptiles in a miserable living environment. They have no chance of a good life. Dogs, cats and birds are the most abused.

The majority of dogs that Petland receives are from mills which breed puppies to be sold to pet shops. The mills do not care about the welfare of their dogs. The puppies born in unsanitary and overcrowded conditions are later kept in separate cages. The mills treat the puppies as products and ship them to Petland, where they are again confined in cages.

Petland allows visitors to interact with these dogs, even though they are often afraid and aggressive. Playing with the dogs releases them from cages, but it also makes them believe that someone is going to take them away. This will make them feel safe and free from cages. When they go back to their cages, the dogs become depressed.

Dog shelters have large, open areas for the dogs to run around. People can hold and pet dogs in the shelter visitor area, which prevents them from being confined to cramped cages.

Petland could follow the guidelines of a shelter for dogs, but instead, they stack their animals in cages as if they were a can full of sardines.

In a 2009 exposé, Petland shipped records were traced to puppy mills in the United States. Petland is America’s biggest retailer of puppy mills. More than 15 000 puppies are sold in Petland shops.

Puppy mills produce nothing but dogs and cats. “There is little love and care. You’re just calculating their lives.” Elisabeth Bramlett is a volunteer at the Humane Society for two years.

Bramlett takes in stray pets and cares for and socializes them with other humans and animals.

I’ve heard bad to negative things about Petland. Petland does not test for illness or do it correctly.

In puppy mills, cats are treated the same as dogs, but kitten mills produce them. Petland also continues to provide support for these kitten mills, which breed adult cats repeatedly. Breeders who are responsible will retire their breeding females at an early age. But mills continue to breed cats as old as six, ten or even more. Petland confines kittens in cages when they get them from mills. Petland cages do not give these cats the space they need to move around.

The bird mills also produce large numbers of birds to be sold as pets around the world. Petland is one of the many pet shops that buys parrots. These parrots have lifespans over 70 years. Petland sells tiny parrots that have a shorter life span. Petland clips their wings so the birds can’t get the exercise they require. Petland doesn’t provide companionship for birds with humans or a nutritious diet. They sell birds artificial food instead, even though birds need the nutrients that insects provide.

We must therefore do everything we can to save these animals and stop them from being abused by Petland, as well as the animal mills.

They are happier and more grateful if you adopt animals who have been living on the street. Bramlett stated that it was good for the local community.

By adopting an animal from a shelter, you are saving animals that would otherwise end up in mills. Try volunteering in shelters that truly care about their animals instead of playing at Petland. Understanding the evil acts committed by Petland, animal mills and other businesses can help improve the conditions for shelters and future pets.

We must ensure that all animals have the opportunity to live a healthy and happy life.
